Three routes to entitlement

You do not have to be the person born there. Entitlement also passes between generations, and we need to know from the outset whose connection the claim is based on.

You were born and lived in the UK

Entitlement is assessed on your own birth record and the years you lived in the UK.

Your parent was born in the UK and you hold citizenship through them

The claim is in your name and assessed through your parent. This route is open to people who already hold the citizenship.

Your grandparent was born in the UK

This requires a three-generation chain: the grandparent, the linking parent and you. We check it for you.

Please fill in the details accurately. The fuller the picture, the larger the amount we can trace for you. The questionnaire also asks about your family background (parents' and siblings' names and ages), because eligibility is assessed at family level and often opens further entitlement through parents or siblings.

What is your claim based on?

Entitlement depends on your connection to the UK: some people were born and lived there themselves, while others qualify through a parent or a grandparent who was born there. Each route has different criteria and different documents, so we need to know exactly who is applying and through whom.
